A couple weeks ago I came across Gotye (pronounced “gore-ti-yeah”). I really wanted to make fun of him cause I felt the first song I listened to, “Somebody I used to Know“, felt heavily influenced by Sting/Phil Collins or someone like that. But after listening to a couple more of their songs — like the happiest song I’ve heard so far this year, “In Your Light” — and finally landing on “Thanks for Your Time“, I started looking to see if they would be playing anywhere near me. This is a group I have to see in order to believe they are as good as I think they might be.
As it turns out, he is playing at the Aragon Ballroom in April. Plus he will have New Zealand singer Kimbra on stage with him. I guess they had planned shows at the Riv and Park West, but with the speed that those shows sold out, they combined them and sent them to the Aragon. To be honest, I have no idea what to expect from this show. Some of his songs sound like catchy 80′s pop to me, while others are chill, spacey, and modern. It seems like the night will be a fun mix of dancing around and chilling out. It has been awhile since I have have gotten this excited over seeing a new band. After listening to them fairly consistently the last couple weeks I have yet to find a song that I haven’t liked. I’m curious to see what he is all about. I know he plays the drums and creates his own samples. He seems like the type of guy that if he wanted to, he could have recorded his entire album by himself.
Gotye is Wouter “Wally” De Backer, born in Belgium but moved to Australia at a young age. He will also be performing at Coachella later in April. You can follow him on Facebook and Twitter. Also be sure to check out his Official Website.
